10 Common IELTS Reading Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)

📅 August 2026 ⏱ 7 min read ✍️ BandUp Team

Most IELTS Reading candidates make the same mistakes — and most of them are completely avoidable. The difference between Band 6 and Band 7.5 in Reading is often not English ability, but exam technique. Here are the 10 most common mistakes and exactly how to fix each one.

1

Reading the Passage Before the Questions

This is the most common time-wasting mistake. Candidates read the entire passage carefully, then look at the questions — and have to read sections again to find the answers.

✅ The Fix
Always read the questions FIRST. Underline key words in each question. Then scan the passage to find those specific words or their synonyms. You'll know exactly what to look for before you start reading.
⏱ This one change saves 5-7 minutes per passage
2

Confusing FALSE with NOT GIVEN

This is the most mark-costing mistake in True/False/Not Given questions. Candidates choose FALSE when the correct answer is NOT GIVEN — or vice versa.

❌ FALSE means
The passage says the OPPOSITE of the statement. The topic IS mentioned but contradicts the statement.
✅ NOT GIVEN means
The passage does NOT mention this topic at all — OR you cannot tell from the passage whether it is true or false.
✅ The Fix
Ask yourself: "Does the passage mention this topic?" If NO → NOT GIVEN. If YES → does it agree or disagree? Agree = TRUE, Disagree = FALSE.
3

Looking for Exact Words Instead of Synonyms

IELTS questions never use the exact same words as the passage. They always paraphrase. Candidates who scan for the exact question word waste time and miss answers.

❌ Question says
"scientists discovered" — candidate searches for "discovered" in the passage
✅ Passage says
"researchers found" — same meaning, different words. Always think of synonyms first.
✅ The Fix
Before scanning, write 2 synonyms for each key word in the question. Search for those synonyms — not the original words.
4
Spending Too Long on One Question

Candidates get stuck on a difficult question and spend 3-4 minutes on it — missing 2-3 easier questions that follow. Every question is worth the same mark.

✅ The Fix
The 2-minute rule: If you cannot find the answer in 2 minutes, skip it and move on. Mark it with a star on your question paper. Come back at the end if time allows. Never leave a blank — always guess.
5

Not Following the Word Limit

"Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS" — this instruction is strict. Writing three words makes your answer wrong even if the key information is correct.

❌ Wrong (3 words)
"urban green spaces" — automatic zero even if the content is correct
✅ Correct (2 words)
"green spaces" — stays within the limit and gets the mark
✅ The Fix
Always count your words before writing your final answer. Articles (a, the) count as words. Numbers written as digits count as one word.
6

Reading Passage 3 with the Same Speed as Passage 1

Passage 3 is significantly harder and more academic. Candidates who spend the same amount of time on each passage often run out of time on Passage 3.

✅ The Fix
Strict 20-minutes-per-passage rule. When your timer hits 20 minutes — move on regardless. For Passage 3, prioritize easier question types (multiple choice, T/F/NG) over harder ones (matching information).

7

Changing Answers Based on General Knowledge

A common mistake: a candidate reads a statement, knows from their own knowledge that it is true, and marks TRUE — but the passage doesn't actually say it.

IELTS Reading is a test of reading comprehension, not general knowledge. Your answer must be based ONLY on what the passage says.

✅ The Fix
Always ask: "Does the PASSAGE say this?" not "Do I know this is true?" If you cannot point to a specific sentence in the passage that supports your answer — reconsider.
8

Leaving Blanks on the Answer Sheet

There is NO penalty for wrong answers in IELTS Reading. A blank = 0 marks. A guess = a chance of 1 mark. Many candidates leave blanks when they are unsure — this is a guaranteed loss.

✅ The Fix
Always write something for every question. For T/F/NG — if unsure, guess NOT GIVEN (it is statistically common). For multiple choice — eliminate obviously wrong options and guess from the remaining ones.
✅ A blank is always wrong. A guess might be right.
9

Not Using Transfer Time to Check Spelling

You have 10 minutes at the end to transfer answers to the answer sheet. Most candidates just copy answers without checking. One spelling mistake = one wrong answer.

✅ The Fix
Transfer time checklist:
• Check spelling of every word answer
• Check plurals — "river" vs "rivers" matters
• Check word limits — remove extra words
• Fill all remaining blanks with your best guess
10

Not Practising Under Timed Conditions

Many candidates practice Reading at their own pace — pausing, rereading, using a dictionary. Then in the real exam they panic when the clock is ticking.

✅ The Fix
For the last 2 weeks before your exam, every Reading practice must be timed: 3 passages, 60 minutes, no pausing, no dictionary. This trains your brain to work at exam speed and removes the clock-panic on exam day.
📈 Timed practice is the fastest way to improve Reading
🎯

Quick summary: Read questions first → use synonyms → follow word limits → 20 min per passage → never leave blanks → always check spelling. Fix these 10 mistakes and your Reading score will improve in days.
