How to Improve Your IELTS Score in One Week

๐Ÿ“… August 2026 โฑ 8 min read โœ๏ธ BandUp Team

One week is not a lot of time โ€” but it is enough to improve your IELTS band score by 0.5 to 1.0 if you use every day strategically. This is not about cramming everything. It is about fixing the most impactful mistakes and building the right habits fast. Here is your 7-day action plan.

โš ๏ธ

Realistic expectation: In one week you can realistically improve by 0.5 band. Going from 5.5 to 7.0 in one week is not possible. But going from 6.0 to 6.5 โ€” absolutely achievable with this plan.

โšก Quick Wins โ€” Do These Today

Reading

Read questions FIRST โ€” before reading the passage. This alone saves 5-7 minutes per passage and improves accuracy immediately.

Listening

Never leave blanks โ€” always guess. No penalty for wrong answers. A blank is guaranteed zero; a guess might score.

Writing

Always write an Overview paragraph in Task 1. Without it, you cannot score above Band 5 on Task Achievement.

Speaking

Use the W-W-W-H-F formula in Part 2 โ€” What, When/Where, Who, How, Future. Never run out of ideas again.

1

Day 1 โ€” Diagnose Your Weaknesses

Monday ยท Foundation

  • Morning (1 hour): Take one timed practice test for your weakest skill. Score it honestly.
  • Afternoon (30 min): Review every wrong answer. Understand WHY you got it wrong โ€” not just what the correct answer is.
  • Evening (30 min): Learn 10 academic vocabulary words. Write each in a sentence.
  • Speaking practice: Record yourself for 2 minutes on any topic. Listen back โ€” notice hesitations and repeated words.
๐ŸŽฏ Goal: Identify your top 3 weaknesses to fix this week
2

Day 2 โ€” Reading & Listening Focus

Tuesday ยท Comprehension Skills

  • Reading (45 min): Practice one full passage timed (20 min). Focus on True/False/Not Given โ€” the most mark-losing question type. Remember: NOT GIVEN means the passage doesn't mention it, not that it's false.
  • Listening (30 min): Practice Sections 3 and 4 โ€” these are hardest. Focus on catching opinions and corrections, not just facts.
  • Vocabulary (20 min): Learn synonyms for 10 common words: increase, decrease, important, show, problem, good, bad, change, use, need.
  • Review (15 min): Check all wrong answers from today's practice.
๐ŸŽฏ Goal: Master True/False/Not Given and listening for opinions
3

Day 3 โ€” Writing Task 1 Mastery

Wednesday ยท Graph Description

  • Study (20 min): Review the 4-paragraph Task 1 structure โ€” Introduction (paraphrase) โ†’ Overview (main trend, no data) โ†’ Body 1 โ†’ Body 2.
  • Practice (20 min): Write one complete Task 1 response. Time yourself โ€” 20 minutes maximum.
  • Language (20 min): Learn 10 graph vocabulary words: surged, plummeted, peaked at, levelled off, accounted for, followed by, by contrast, a significant proportion.
  • AI feedback (15 min): Use IELTS BandUp to get band score on your Task 1 โ€” check if AI flags your vocabulary as weak.
๐ŸŽฏ Goal: Write a complete Task 1 with Overview in under 20 minutes
4

Day 4 โ€” Writing Task 2 Mastery

Thursday ยท Academic Essay

  • Study (15 min): Review the 4-paragraph Task 2 structure โ€” Introduction (position) โ†’ Body 1 (main argument + example) โ†’ Body 2 (second argument) โ†’ Conclusion.
  • Practice (40 min): Write one complete Task 2 essay. Time yourself โ€” 40 minutes. Aim for 260-290 words.
  • Vocabulary (15 min): Learn academic phrases: "It is widely acknowledged that", "There is growing evidence that", "it could be argued that", "a significant proportion of", "have a profound impact on".
  • Review (10 min): Check your essay โ€” did you give your opinion clearly? Did you use formal language? No contractions?
๐ŸŽฏ Goal: Complete Task 2 in 40 minutes with 260+ words
5

Day 5 โ€” Speaking Confidence

Friday ยท Fluency & Vocabulary

  • Part 1 practice (20 min): Answer 10 common Part 1 questions. Always give 2-3 sentences โ€” never one word. Add a reason or example to every answer.
  • Part 2 practice (20 min): Pick 3 cue cards and speak for exactly 2 minutes using W-W-W-H-F formula. Record yourself.
  • Part 3 practice (20 min): Practice opinion questions. Use: "In my view...", "I strongly believe...", "It could be argued that...", "On the other hand..."
  • Listen back (10 min): Count your hesitations ("um", "uh", "you know"). Replace with natural pauses or discourse markers.
๐ŸŽฏ Goal: Speak for 2 full minutes in Part 2 without stopping
6

Day 6 โ€” Full Mock Test

Saturday ยท Exam Simulation

  • Morning (2.5 hours): Do a complete timed mock test โ€” Reading (60 min) + Listening (30 min) + Writing (60 min). No pausing, no dictionary.
  • Afternoon (1 hour): Score everything. Compare with Day 1 baseline โ€” have you improved?
  • Review (1 hour): Understand every wrong answer. Focus on the question types you still struggle with.
  • Speaking (20 min): Do a full Speaking mock โ€” Parts 1, 2, and 3. Record yourself and listen back critically.
๐ŸŽฏ Goal: See measurable improvement from Day 1 baseline
7

Day 7 โ€” Rest & Final Review

Sunday ยท Exam Eve

  • Light review only (30 min): Go through your vocabulary list. Re-read your key strategies for each skill. No new practice tests.
  • Exam logistics (15 min): Confirm exam time and location. Prepare your ID. Pack what you need. Plan your route.
  • Sleep (mandatory): Get 8 hours sleep. Your brain consolidates learning during sleep โ€” this is not optional.
  • Morning of exam: Eat a proper breakfast. Arrive 30 minutes early. Stay calm โ€” you have prepared well.
โœ… You are ready. Trust your preparation.
