How to Prepare for IELTS in 30 Days — Complete Study Plan

📅 July 2026 ⏱ 10 min read ✍️ BandUp Team

30 days is enough time to significantly improve your IELTS band score — if you use them correctly. Most candidates waste the month before their exam without a clear plan. This guide gives you a week-by-week, day-by-day schedule that covers all four skills systematically and builds to a peak on exam day.

📋

Before Day 1: Take a full practice test to identify your starting band score and your weakest skill. This tells you where to focus your energy. If you're at Band 5.5, your path to Band 7 is different from someone at Band 6.5.

⏰ Recommended Daily Routine (2 hours)

30 min
Skill focus session (reading, listening, writing, or speaking)
20 min
Vocabulary — learn 5 new academic words, use them in sentences
30 min
Practice test — timed section from your weakest skill
20 min
Review answers — understand every mistake, not just the score
20 min
Speaking — record yourself answering 3 IELTS Part 1 questions

Week 1 Goals:

  • Day 1: Take a full timed practice test. Score all 4 skills. Identify your weakest skill — this gets the most time in Week 2.
  • Reading: Master the 3 main question types — True/False/Not Given, Matching Headings, and Summary Completion. Practice reading questions BEFORE the passage.
  • Listening: Focus on Sections 1 and 2 (easier). Practice predicting answer types from questions.
  • Writing Task 1: Learn the 4-sentence introduction formula — Paraphrase + Overview + Key feature 1 + Key feature 2.
  • Speaking: Record yourself daily. Focus on speaking for the full 2 minutes in Part 2 without stopping.
  • Vocabulary: Learn 5 words per day from the academic word list. Use each in a sentence.

Week 2 Goals:

  • Weakest skill gets 40% of your time — if Writing is weak, do 2 Task 2 essays this week and get AI feedback on both.
  • Writing Task 2: Master the 4-paragraph structure — Introduction (position) + Body 1 + Body 2 + Conclusion. Write one full essay every 2 days.
  • Listening Sections 3&4: These are harder — academic discussions and monologues. Practice identifying the speaker's opinion, not just facts.
  • Grammar focus: Eliminate your most common errors — articles (a/the), subject-verb agreement, and prepositions.
  • Day 13: Do a 2-skill mini mock (Reading + Listening). Review every wrong answer carefully.

Week 3 Goals:

  • This week is about timing: Every practice session must be timed. No pausing, no dictionary, no replaying audio.
  • Reading: You must finish all 3 passages in 60 minutes. If you ran out of time in Week 1, use the 20-minute-per-passage rule strictly now.
  • Writing: Write Task 1 in 20 minutes, Task 2 in 40 minutes. Count your words — aim for 160+ in Task 1, 260+ in Task 2.
  • Day 19: Review every mistake from Days 15-18. Pattern recognition — are you making the same mistakes repeatedly?
  • Day 20: Full 4-skill practice test under exam conditions. Score yourself honestly.

Week 4 Goals:

  • Days 22-24: Target only your remaining weak areas. Don't try to learn new things — reinforce what you already know.
  • Day 25: Final full mock test. This is your last timed practice. Review results but don't panic about the score.
  • Day 26: Light review only — go through your vocabulary list, re-read key strategies. No new practice tests.
  • Day 27-28: Complete rest. Your brain needs recovery time before the exam. Trust the preparation you've done.
  • Exam day: Sleep 8 hours the night before. Eat a proper breakfast. Arrive 30 minutes early. Bring your ID and registration.

⚠️

Realistic expectation: Most candidates improve by 0.5–1.0 band in 30 days of focused practice. If you're at Band 5.5, targeting Band 7 in one month is unrealistic — target Band 6.5 first. Consistent practice over 2-3 months gives the best results.
